Volunteer Tutors
Literacy Plus depends on volunteer tutors to deliver its services. Our
volunteer tutors are men and women of all ages, from many different backgrounds.
What they have in common is an interest in helping others improve their
reading, writing or math skills. Literacy Plus asks volunteers to commit
to working with a student for at least six months. Tutors work one-to-one
with students for two to four hours a week.
Literacy Plus provides tutors with:
- orientation to literacy issues
- basic tutor training
- a tutor manual
- access to a variety of teaching and learning materials
- ongoing support
from the Student/Tutor Coordinator
- a meaningful and satisfying volunteer
experience
Literacy Plus expects that Volunteer Tutors will:
- commit to two to four
hours a week for at least six months
- attend the basic tutor training
- maintain confidentiality regarding
any personal information, inquiries and documents a student may share
- have
a criminal record check before starting to tutor
A good tutor is one who:
- is responsive to the needs of the individual student
- facilitates the
student's learning
- respects the student and appreciates that the
student brings skills and prior knowledge to the learning experience
- is
empathetic, caring and interested in the student
- is creative in adapting
teaching methods to suit the individual student’s
needs
- is enthusiastic and willing to keep learning
- can give constructive
feedback
- welcomes the student’s suggestions
- is well organized for each
lesson.
